Robust elegance: Panerai wristwatches
The history of the Panerai watch brand began in 1860 in Florence, Italy, when Giovanni Panerai founded a workshop for precision instruments. Initially, the company specialized in the manufacture of compasses and depth gauges for the Italian navy, as Giovanni Panerai was an authorized dealer for the navy.
In 1916, his son Guido Panerai took over the business and led the company into the production of wristwatches for the Italian Navy. The watches had to be robust and reliable and were equipped with fluorescent material for better readability in the dark. This technology was called Radiomir and is still a trademark of the Panerai brand today.
In the 1930s, Panerai supplied watches to the Italian combat swimmers, the so-called "Frogmen". These watches were waterproof and highly accurate, which was crucial for military operations.
During the Second World War, Panerai watches were also used by the German navy as observation instruments. In the post-war period, the company turned back to the production of civilian watches and also supplied the retail trade.
In the 1990s, the Panerai brand experienced a resurgence when it was taken over by the Richemont Group. The new owners launched a strong marketing campaign and opened exclusive boutiques in the world's major cities. The Panerai brand became a symbol of luxury and prestige and its watches are prized by celebrities and collectors alike.
Today, Panerai offers a wide range of watches, from classic vintage-style models to modern diving watches. The brand has also developed innovative technologies such as the Luminor system, which offers even better readability in the dark.
