Jewelry gemstones: history, meaning and use
A journey through the history of jewelry gemstones
Gemstones have shaped jewelry over thousands of years. Their beauty, rarity and symbolic meaning make them valuable companions in numerous cultures and eras.
Ancient treasures and their history
Since ancient times, people have adorned themselves with precious stones. Lapis lazuli, turquoise and jasper already adorned jewelry in ancient Egypt. Greeks and Romans preferred sapphires, emeralds and rubies for royal elegance.
Gemstones as symbols of power
During the Middle Ages, European nobles and kings valued gemstones as a sign of power and wealth. The crown and royal regalia were often adorned with gemstones to emphasize authority and dignity.
The symbolic meaning of jewelry gemstones
Gemstones carry deep symbolic meaning and are associated with spiritual properties. Many believe in the transferable powers that gemstones can exert on the wearer.
For example, the ruby symbolizes love, passion and vitality, while the sapphire stands for wisdom, truth and spirituality. The emerald, on the other hand, refers to peace, happiness and wealth, while the diamond stands for purity, strength and invincibility.
Gemstones as jewels of creativity
The application of jewelry gemstones spans a variety of jewelry items - rings, bracelets, earrings, necklaces and pendants. They often serve as eye-catchers and can be cut in a variety of shapes and sizes.
Combinations with other materials create unique works of art. Gold and diamonds create timeless brilliance, while silver and colored gemstones such as topaz, amethyst or peridot conjure up vibrant color palettes.
The enduring fascination of jewelry gemstones
The history of jewelry gemstones is as long as it is fascinating. Their beauty, rarity and symbolism are appreciated worldwide and make them indispensable components of jewelry creations. Whether it's an engagement ring, necklace or earrings, jewelry gemstones are a wonderful way to express your personality and style.
Diamonds, sapphires, emeralds and rubies
Now let's move on to our gemstone store. At Eppli we have concentrated on a small but fine selection of gemstones, which we offer for you. We would now like to say a few words about each type.Diamonds:
Today, they are among the most expensive gemstones, but in the past they were referred to as a classic jewelry stone and had no special status, especially in the Middle Ages. Hard to believe when you consider the current prices of different gemstones today.
Sapphires:
Sapphires are traded in the three main colors yellow, blue and red. These three colors can also have different hues, such as pastel yellow or even light blue, again greatly expanding the range of sapphires. Most sapphires, however, shine in a dark blue.
Emeralds:
Emeralds are predominantly found in an intense green, which makes them particularly popular among gemstone lovers. But even here, different shades of color can appear, but they never completely lose the green. Especially green emeralds are therefore among the most beautiful gemstones in the world.
Rubies:
You have certainly heard of the color "ruby red". It was not named after the unique rubies for nothing, which shimmer in a very unique reddish tone. Depending on the gemstone, this can be intense and gaudy, or sometimes dull and restrained. On the whole, therefore, the hues vary between pale red and dark red. In addition, ruby is considered the highest quality of all colored gemstones.
Opal:
Finally, let's move on to opals, which are also valued and were even rated above gemstones in ancient times. The distinctive feature of an opal is its extremely varied and sometimes milky coloration. Depending on the type, they can glitter and shine in a wide variety of colors, looking like an object from another world.
